LON - Local Operation Network

LON is different from traditional automation. A LON integrates multiple system components using a common system architecture and infrastructure and computer processes are executed in a decentralized manner where typically small components communicate with each other on a common network. When several components must communicate in a common network, there is a need for a set of rules; a LON protocol that controls your decentralized ventilation and air flow. LON facilitates full component interoperability in a peer-to-peer fashion

When several different technologies have to "melt" together and communicate, it is important that the systems speak the same "language". For instance you can connect your light switch and your decentralized ventilation units to allow for cooperation between the two. Now you can control your ventilators in a much more energy efficient manner.
